Cory’s Corner: Fire update at Day Services – Adult building

Happy New Year, everyone!

While this blog post will be dedicated to a building we lost to fire, we want to emphasize how thankful we are for the safety of all CLIMB staff and participants. We are so blessed to be able to serve individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities through our Day Services – Adult program, and we have no doubt that 2022 is going to be a great year – even if it looks a little different than 2021.

As many of you know, CLIMB’s Day Services – Adult building caught on fire while staff and participants were in it on December 10, 2021. Everyone safely evacuated, and families were contacted to let them know that their loved one was safe. Then, the Senatobia Fire Department worked for approximately eight (8) hours to completely extinguish the fire. Needless to say, little to nothing was salvageable from the building, which has since been completely torn down and hauled away in a dumpster.

Moments like these remind us that the “stuff” – material possessions – are not as important as the priority we sometimes put on them. New possessions can be purchased, but lives cannot be replaced, which might sound cliché. However, after experiencing this fire, we feel that there has never been a statement more true. We praise God for watching over the safety and wellbeing of our staff and participants.

Below are photos from the day of the fire. However, after a short time without a space to meet in, we at CLIMB are very proud to share that we have the opportunity to continue serving CLIMB participants – even though our building was destroyed!

Thanks to our sister organization and with the State of Mississippi’s approval, we are using The Baddour Center’s Community Life Building as our temporary Day Services – Adult facility while we going through the building process. We continue to have access to exercise equipment, an area to prepare snacks and lunch, as well as a space to enjoy art and music – just to name a few of the opportunities in which CLIMB participants can engage. We are so excited for the opportunity to continue serving our CLIMB friends!
